Underwater Digital Cameras 101 For Landlubbers

First came the camera. Then there was the underwater camera. After that came the digital camera - and now we have underwater digital cameras. Underwater digital cameras are ideal for capturing the beauty of the undersea world (or the bottom of your swimming pool if you have that special artistic eye!). They are used by both scientists and scuba divers. Digital cameras come in many well-known brands including Kodak, Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Olympus. Surprisingly enough, the cheapest brands cost less than $200, although prices rise quite steeply for the highest quality cameras.

Some of the advantages of underwater digital cameras include:

- You can plug them into a TV.

- They are smaller and lighter than film cameras

- Bad shots can be easily deleted

- They can change resolution, which is useful for wide-angle photography in low lighting conditions underwater

- They produce better high-resolution shots

- They never run out of film (because they don’t use film!)

- They have better depth of field (up to 4 times that of film cameras)

- They feature strobe shutter speeds as fast as 1/800th of a second, much faster than even the best film cameras

- Applications include sea mode, land mode, and external flash mode

Here are some examples of the best underwater digital cameras:

1. The Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z1000

It has a 2. 8 inch LCD screen and 10 megapixels. Housing is required. Up to 3,2000 ISO. 3x optical zoom lens, and it even includes an anti-shake feature.

2. The Pentax Optio

It has a 2.5 inch LCD screen and 7 megapixels. It requires no additional housing. Usable for up to half an hour in depths of up to 5 feet. It can even be used for shooting underwater videos. Up to 1,600 ISO.

3. Fuji Film FinePix A400

Complete with waterproof housing, 4.2 megapixels. What’s more, it’s CHEAP - under $200 at the time of this writing).

4. SeaLife DC500

Includes both Land and sea flash modes. 5 megapixels, 3x optical zoom. Features an anti-shake function that compensates for movement by either the photographer or the subject.

The foregoing is only a small smaple of the total range of brands, cameras, and features available for photographers of almost any budget and any level of sophistication.

I’m camera shopping. What is your advice?

I have a 8.3mp Fujifilm camera with 3x zoom. It’s a good camera, but it’s bout an inch thick (I can’t fit it in my pocket) and I can’t find any underwater housing for it. I would like to get a new, more portable camera with more zoom and higher resolution, but i’m not sure if I need one. I was going to buy an underwater camera originally, but during the summer I spend a LOT of time at the beach, in pools, etc. and I’ve read reviews about the cameras leaking after a lot of time in the water. So, I’m wondering if a new camera is worth the investment, and if you know of any really reliable underwater cameras, or camera housings that are cheap. Thanks!!!

there really aren’t any Underwater housings that are cheap. if you enjoy taking pictures at night, a sony cybershot is a good choice. personally, i have a casio exilim. they made 2 housings for them: one that is up to 40 meters underwater and is $199 and one that goes up to 3 meters under and is 99 dollars. however to my knowledge the casio exilim cameras are discontinued and i assume along with all other casing. good luck searching!

Looking for a underwater camera that takes AA batteries……?

I want to be able to take underwater pictures while snorkeling, I also want a camera that takes AA batteries that way I don’t have to worry about recharging my camera.

I have tried using my current AA battery in an underwater housing, but that is annoying too! I just want a camera that is already waterproof! I also know I could just buy a spare battery, but I still find that to be a hassle. So does anyone know of a camera that is both waterproof and takes AA batteries?????
Ironically I do actually use rechargeable batteries, I buy the Sony 2500 mAh AA Rechargeable Nimh Batteries which I can actually get a lot of shots out of. I just like knowing I can buy batteries in an emergency. I do have a bad habit of leaving the LCD on, especially underwater when a fish might swim by at a moment’s notice.

I just looked through all the underwater cameras made by Canon, Olympus and Pentax and they all use the state of the art Li-ion batteries.

There is a good reason for this. Li-ion batteries have a much longer life, not only when providing power to the camera, but if cared for, can last over 5 years before then need to be replaced and recycled.

There is an other more important reason for manufacturers limiting the number of cameras they sell that use disposable cameras … The impact alkaline batteries have on the environment and the fact that most people just toss them into a trash can rather than to find a recycling point

If you always charge the cameras battery the night before you go out shooting, it is rare that you will shoot more than 250 shots in one day (250 is about the minimum number of shots a fully charged Li-ion battery will shoot, unless you are in the habit of using the LCD to show off your shots or don’t turn the camera off after each shooting sequence)

Some of the current DSLR’s can get over 1000 shots per charge using Li-ion batteries and those batteries last for years

DiCa Pac underwater camera case?

does anyone have any experience or know anything about these underwater camera cases? do they work up to 33ft? Yes, i know an acual hard case/housing by ikelite wouldbe better, but im not going to spend 800 dollars on a housing for a 300$ dollar camera. ( have a Canon poweshot sx20 is, and ikelite makes the only housing for it, none by canon.)

Sucks to be us but if you don’t want to replace your camera because of a flood…buy the IkeLite housing. I have an Ikelite. I’ll buy another camera if I have to, to fit it. I WON’T buy cheap crap that fails for a housing.
IkeLite…200 foot test
DiCaPac…33 feet.
Hmmm…do the math and factor in that all your camera functions are available except the print button which no one has used successfully underwater and still had a camera left.
You pay to play and welcome to the club.

Underwater case for Kodak digital camera?

I’ve recently bought a Kodak digital camera (a V1003) and I want to take it diving so I can get some good shots of the reef.

I can’t seem to find a housing for it anywhere, have checked with Kodak, eBay and Ikelite.

Can anyone tell me if a housing even exists for this camera (which it certainly doesn’t appear to), or suggest a suitable alternative?

Seems like Ikelite would have one for it. They seem to have alot of housings. You might want to check in the back of dive magazines ( like Skin Diver ) where all the ads are. Seems like I have seen several after-market companies offering housings. I’ve seen those "zip lock" style bags that have the clear glass where your lens would be but not sure the depth ratings on those. Good Luck !

just found this…

Digital Camera accessories – Necessary accompaniments

A digital camera is a necessary in the present era. To enhance its stimulating experience there are many accessories available in the market. A memory card is one of the most important accessories of a digital camera. Memory cards are used to store the pictures we take on digital cameras. They can be equated with hard disks in computers. Camera manufacturers usually fit their gadgets with low storage media cards. This is a mainly marketing technique, to make users buy additional memory cards for increasing the storage capacity of their cameras. Smart Media, Memory Stick, Compact Flash etc are all different type of memory cards. It is also possible to re-use memory cards, after saving the required photographs on the computer, or copying them on CDs etc. Now days we can go anywhere with an ultra-portable, high-speed USB flash drive that provides a convenient solution for storing, transferring, and sharing multimedia and more. These USB flash drives are available both in a variety of capacities and capabilities to fit our storage needs. Batteries are the fuel of digital cameras. Some digital cameras come with rechargeable batteries. Cameras are commonly sold with battery chargers to enhance their buy ability. It is always desirable to stock an extra pair of batteries. Digital photography tends to become tedious due to limited battery life. Tripods are the stands that help us to take shots in a better way. Therefore, if we want our photographs without blur and have a professional touch we can use tripods. Camera tripods have been around since the dawn of photography and are a guaranteed way to improve steadiness and decrease “camera shakes”. . A tripod is a must-have for anyone who takes more than a couple. For protecting our cameras, we can purchase stylishly designed cases to make sure that we are always in style and camera is protected. Many great looking cases are now on offer as well. They vary from the large and quite costly soft leather cases to the smaller and more affordable carry pouches. For underwater housing, we can take our digital cameras on snorkeling and scuba diving trips to take the same quality of vibrant pictures underwater as well as on land with the help of waterproof kits. Underwater photography is a rapidly growing genre, especially now that the equipment required has dramatically reduced in cost. Other accessories under the same category include waterproof halogen lights that work as deep as 75m below the surface of the water and numerous color filters to balance the overwhelming blue watercolor. Each accessory will add its own unique and distinct value to any digital camera.

have you ever used a underwater camera case? do they reduce picture quality?

I’m thinking of getting a underwater camera case like this:
http://www.bluewatersports.eu/100-waterproof-camera-pouch-with-extended-lens-housing-1314-p.asp

and just wondered if anyone has used one before and if your camera still takes good pictures with them on.

thanks

I’m a scuba diver and I have proper rigid Underwater housings for both my DSLR and compact cameras. I haven’t used these ‘plastic bag’ types before, but there’s no reason why they should affect image quality underwater - plenty of other things will. Make sure you don’t go deeper than the recommended depth with it or you’ll flood the camera and get close to you subject. Turn off the flash unless you are very close and the water is very clear otherwise you will get backscatter (white dots) over your image from the flash.

When you are out of the water, if there are water drops on the front of the case over the lens area you’ll get blurred areas in your image, so try to dy it off with a soft cloth.

Avoid getting sand/grit on the lens area part of the pouch. Rinse it well in freshwater after use.
